Our History

Lincoln Street Inc.’s very first location was in the old Gear Shaper Company building, in downtown Springfield, Vermont. The site was LSI’s home from 1987 to 2006.

Lincoln Street Inc.: Quality personalized services since 1979, focusing on respect, empowerment and inclusion.

In 1979, a group of local parents were seeking a residential alternative to institutional care, an environment that would provide a comprehensive, caring and personalized approach to residential services for their intellectually disabled children. The outcome was “Lincoln Street Inc..” which originally was formed as a single residence for six children with multiple disabilities.

LSI’s expansion into a brand-new building on River Street in Springfield took place in 2006.

From this highly “family focused” beginning that remains a cornerstone of the agency’s culture today, LSI evolved to become a Vermont Specialized Services Agency, designated by the state’s Department of Aging & Independent Living.

Today, LSI is a full-service agency offering an array of personalized supports to people with intellectual disabilities and their families, throughout Vermont’s Windsor and Windham counties.

Our culture of respectful support and empowerment for the people we serve has helped us become a highly successful organization, one that receives high consumer satisfaction ratings and successful comprehensive reviews of services by the state of Vermont, year after year.

LSI’s current Executive Director, Cheryl Thrall, has been with the agency since 1986.
